Arjun bursts into Pritha’s living room breathless and tense. He clasps her arm gently but firmly and asks, “Where is Victor now?” Pritha’s eyes widen in surprise. She shakes her head and whispers that she doesn’t know. Without another word, Arjun rushes out into the warm afternoon air. He finds Victor’s friends nearby and presses each of them for answers. His heart pounds as he imagines Victor standing at the altar, about to marry someone he does not truly feel for. Every second feels heavy, and Arjun knows he must stop whatever is unfolding before it is too late.
At the small temple just beyond the town’s edge, yellow marigolds hang from the pillars and a soft breeze stirs the incense smoke. Victor stands beside Tista, both dressed in simple but elegant clothes. The priest’s gentle chant fills the quiet space. Victor glances at Tista’s shaky hands and feels a sinking in his chest. He forces himself to stand tall, but his eyes betray his doubt. Tista looks at the priest, then at Victor, and her lips tremble. Inside, she wonders if this moment is really meant for her or if it was arranged by others long ago.
Just as the priest raises his hand to begin the final vows, Deepa and Arjun arrive, hearts racing. Deepa’s face is set with determination. She steps forward without hesitation and takes Tista’s hand. Tista does not pull away. Arjun stays close, ready to back Deepa up if anyone tries to stop her. Gasps rise from the small crowd. Victor watches in shock, his world shifting with every beat of his heart.
Deepa leads Tista away to a stone bench under a shaded tree. She kneels beside her and says softly, “You deserve to choose your own path.” Tista nods, tears trickling down her cheeks, relief mixed with fear. She meets Victor’s gaze for a moment and sees gratitude in his eyes.
That evening, they all return to Pritha’s house under a sky turning pink with sunset. Labonyo, Pritha’s older sister, appears at the doorway, her face hard with anger. “You had no right,” she snaps at Deepa. “You’ve shamed our family.” Deepa stands tall and meets Labonyo’s glare. “I did what was right,” she replies quietly. The room falls silent as everyone absorbs her words. Victor stands nearby, guilt and relief tangled in his expression. Pritha watches with wide eyes, unsure what the next steps will be.
Late at night, under the soft glow of a lantern in the garden, Arjun finds Victor pacing back and forth. “Why did you agree to the wedding in the first place?” Arjun asks gently. Victor stops and runs a hand through his hair. “I felt trapped by what others expected,” he admits. “I knew in my heart it was wrong.” He looks toward the house where Tista now sleeps peacefully, free to make her own choice. Arjun nods and places a hand on Victor’s shoulder. In that moment, they both understand that this chapter has ended and that a new one, shaped by honesty and true feelings, is ready to begin.
