After a remarkable 28-year run, SABC2 and Word of Mouth Productions have officially announced that the long-standing TV drama Muvhango will be coming to an end.
Since its debut in 1997, Muvhango has won the hearts of many with its compelling narratives, deeply grounded in Tshivenda culture. The series explored the dynamic balance between age-old traditions and the demands of a modern society.
Created by the visionary Duma Ndlovu, Muvhango premiered on 7 April 1997. It introduced viewers to unforgettable characters such as Edward, Catherine, Doobsie, Doris, Chief Azwindini, Thandaza, James, Mulalo, KK, and the iconic Royal family—characters who soon became a part of daily life in many South African homes.
The show was groundbreaking in its mission. During a time when most local dramas were centered on widely spoken dialects, Muvhango boldly showcased Tshivenda, a language often marginalized. This not only brought visibility to the language but also helped celebrate and preserve an important part of South Africa’s cultural fabric.
Throughout its near three-decade run, the show delivered unforgettable story arcs that made a lasting impact. Some standout moments include:
- Mashudu Mukwevho’s emotional death in Johannesburg, held by his Sowetan wife, Catherine, while a cultural clash loomed with his traditional wife, Vho-Masindi.
- The fierce battle between the two wives over Mashudu’s body.
- The gripping love triangle involving Thandaza, Edward, and Doobsie.
- Azwindini’s multiple marriages to Susan, Pfuluwani, Vele, and Mpho.
- The intense rivalry between Azwindini and Mulalo over who would lead the Royal house.
- The grand wedding between Thandaza and Ranthumeng.
- Teboho’s shocking gun attack targeting Thandaza.
- KK’s flamboyant personality, signature fashion, and dramatic home decor.
Reflecting on the journey, creator and Executive Producer Duma Ndlovu shared, “Muvhango gave life to a previously overlooked language, now widely embraced and celebrated across the country. I feel honored to have created television moments that put marginalised languages front and center.”
Lala Tuku, Acting Group Executive for Video Entertainment, added: “For nearly 30 years, Muvhango has been an integral part of SABC2’s schedule and a cherished element of South Africa’s TV legacy. It didn’t just entertain—it represented language, cultural identity, and national pride. The series inspired, educated, and brought unity to diverse audiences nationwide.”
As the local TV landscape evolves, SABC2 aims to carry forward this legacy with fresh stories that continue to reflect the diversity of South African life.
In closing, SABC2 expresses deep appreciation to the entire cast and production team led by Duma Ndlovu. The biggest thanks go to the loyal fans who tuned in religiously every weekday for 28 years. Ri a livhuwa—thank you.
Muvhango will air its final episode on 8 August 2025 at 21:00 on SABC2.
